My Experience Doing the Medical Medium's Liver Cleanse: Days 7-9
We Finished the Medical Medium’s Liver Cleanse!
Day 7, 8, 9 are done and here’s what happened…
We made it through the middle 3 days, which I feel were the toughest days of the cleanse. Consuming no fat is hard as fat is what makes you feel satiated. I hate feeling hungry! It makes me edgy and irritable. Doing this as a family was a good lesson on honing our skills of emotional intelligence.
The Medical Medium says fat makes our livers dumb. It thickens the blood making it sticky thereby the liver holds on to toxic particles, thus it becomes more difficult for the liver to do its job. We at Canadian College of Natural Nutrition are taught that "Fat" is brain food. It improves our nutrient absorption, eases stress and anxiety, and is great for our skin health. Omega 3's help to decrease inflammation, which has been shown to be at the root of many diseases. Fat also slows down the release of carbohydrates into our bloodstream, which helps to balance our blood sugar. Doing this cleanse reminded me of the importance of moderation and why it is necessary to only consume high quality fats that are good for us.
Going into day 7 - I was so excited to be having soup until I realized the Medical Medium recommends that it be served cold. Agh! Raw is better for the live enzymes and probiotics to feed our healthy gut bacteria but with it being winter and so cold outside, and after consuming so many cold raw vegetables, it was not as appealing as we had been hoping for.
On a warm summer day, it would be fabulous, but we were all craving something warm. Some of us made their own and ended up heating it up and enjoyed it much better this way. On day 8 - I tried doing the substitution of using mango instead of the tomatoes in the soup and it tasted more like a breakfast smoothie, which was actually nicer cold. When I made it with the tomatoes it tasted more like a tomato soup, which I think is better warm. Also making it with the mango made it taste much sweeter and it turned it into this pretty bright green colour.
One thing I began to notice by eating all these raw vegetables and fruit was I was feeling much more connected to my intuitive senses. I started to feel more creative and when working with my Energy Medicine clients my “clair” senses were becoming more heightened. Eating foods that have conscious, good vibrational energy are able to nourish us spiritually. Foods that are alive are lighter in density and are brighter with sunlight energy. Plants embody this by photosynthesizing light into energy.
Fortunately for dinner we were allowed to bake the brussel sprouts, and the Medical Medium’s recipe is delicious. I don’t know if this was because they were the first hot food we’d had in 4 days or if they were just something soft to chew, but the caramelized maple syrup glaze was a pick me up. It helped lift our spirits and they were quite filling. This was great along with the fact that brussel sprouts are the ultimate liver cleansing food. The beneficial sulfur in them helps to safely remove our history of built up toxins out of the liver.
Day 9 was drinking a lot of juices and it was relatively easy to do now that we had shrunk our stomachs, prepared our livers, and scrubbed our digestive system. We were all prepped and primed to suck up all the liquids and nutrients that the liver would need to offload our unwanted stored toxins. Other than being extremely hungry by the end of the day, we felt more energized and definitely lighter. When all was done, I stepped on the scale and discovered that I was down 8lbs. I was happy that my Christmas season bloat was gone, and I was feeling pretty good.
I had saved all the vegetable peelings from the last 9 days and had put them into a huge stock pot on our stove.
Veggie Broth
Use all your left-over vegetable peelings
Add more fresh onions, celery and greens (if needed or desired)
4 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
Fresh herbs - parsley, rosemary, thyme, bay leaves
1-2 tsp each sea salt and black pepper (add more to taste)
9-10 cups filtered water
Heat in a pot over medium heat for 45 minutes to an hour. The flavour will deepen the longer it cooks.
Near the end of cooking, taste and adjust flavour as needed, adding more herbs for herby/earthy flavour, salt for saltiness, pepper for a little spice.
Let cool slightly before pouring over a strainer into another pot. Divide between storage vessels (I prefer use Ziplock freezer bags, but you could use mason jars). Store in the refrigerator up to 5 days or in the freezer up to 1 month (sometimes longer). Perfect for use in soups, recipes, gravy, and more!
During this 9-day adventure I was amazed at how many times I had to go back to the store for more celery, cucumbers, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, wild blueberries and spinach! This cleanse is not cheap. After adding up all the bills, the cost came out to be about $300+ per person. Also, it’s a full-time job cutting up all this stuff for 4 people.
Seasonally it’s not the perfect time to do a cleanse, both for cost and for disturbing our circadian rhythm time of hibernation. Springtime, when leafy greens are sprouting, is typically when we are supposed to do our spring cleaning. Regardless we were eager to get a head start to help us recalibrate our health and fitness goals for 2020. We are now looking at new ways to be more plant based, at incorporating more daily healthy green juices, moderating our healthy fats and reducing our consumption of inflammatory foods. All in all, it's been a successful start to the new
year.
